The Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic, scheduled for August 17 and 18, 2013, will continue a beloved Wrightsville Beach surfing tradition. Returning to the south end of Wrightsville Beach, co-hosts Jo Pickett (www.crystalsouthsurfcamp.com) and Jack Viorel (www.indojaxsurfschool.com) are combining skills and resources to provide this forum for all levels of female surfers; amateur to pro, novice to experienced. Divisions will include the following categories: Pro Shortboard and Pro Longboard, open to all ages, and amateur shortboard and longboard, grouped by age. The popular Novice category, open to all ages competing in their FIRST contest, and a new division, Stand Up Paddleboard, as well as the crowd favorite Guppy event, will complete the competition. The Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic amateur age groups are listed below.

Short board age divisions: 12 and under, 13 – 15, 16 – 18, 19 – 29, 30 and over

Long board age divisions: 14 and under, 15 – 20, 21 – 29, 30 and over

SUP race and surf categories / age divisions: 15 and under, 16 and over

Prizes will be awarded to ALL Amateur Finalists. Pro Finalists will receive a cash purse.

Beginning in 1997, hundreds of wahines gathered from near and far to surf together in The East Coast Wahines Championships. This event, enjoyed by locals and traveling wahines, halted after the summer of 2011. Jo Pickett and Jack Viorel are reviving this wahine surfing event under a new name and new management. We are encouraged by the enthusiastic responses from excited wahines and their family members, and their offers of support.
