Camps cost $250 and run Monday through Thursday (please note exceptions on Calendar) from 8:00 to 11:00 am. We meet each morning at Access 39 at the South end of Wrightsville Beach near Crystal Pier.

Summer Surfing Camp is an excellent way to start as a beginner or take your skills to the next level or all the way to Competition.

Crystal South Surf Camp

We teach all ages, Youth, Teens and Adults, Girls, Boys, Moms and Dads. This is a family affair for us and we invite you to participate to your comfort level. We have surfboards sized for you and also body boards available for the very timid that are learning about catching waves for the first time. We have safely and successfully taught boys and girls as young as 6 (if they are very motivated) and as old as 60.

The safety information and wave knowledge we teach is unique to our camp. Many of the instructional techniques and language have been developed over many years of actual experience in the surf teaching and observing with a teacher's eye. It is one thing to be able to surf, but knowing the how to language and techniques is a special skill.

Students learn basic surfing skills in five days such as surfing safety and etiquette, situational ocean awareness, paddling, catching waves, standing, balancing, and turning. Ed Pickett's famous "beach lesson" begins the week. Focusing on safety techniques, Ed uses role play on land to emphasize the importance of applying these safety techniques in the ocean. On land, students learn paddling form, practice pop-ups and experiential safety techniques.

Crystal South Surf Camp As students progress each day, the beach lesson shortens, always reviewing safety skills, and students increase their surf time. Students learn to navigate through the shore break, paddle, and sit on their boards. Each instructor guides three students into waves, coaching the students through progressive skill exercises. Each day, students build upon the skills of the previous lessons, and soon learn to catch waves by themselves. We provide a safe atmosphere that builds community.

Next comes the thrill of standing, balancing, turning, and linking turns. Some campers choose to spend several weeks per summer surfing with us, and return for following summers. Instructors expand the students’ foundation during consecutive weeks, teaching students how to properly execute turns and how to link maneuvers into a flowing dance that comprises surfing. Students will practice and master progressive skills, connecting basic turns with advanced maneuvers to maximize wave performance, grounded by safety awareness techniques.

Camp Times

Camps run Monday through Thursday from 8:00 to 11:00 am. This year we're saving Friday for Drop-ins, Extra Lessons, and rain dates. Feel free to show up on Fridays!

Camp Cost

All Surf Camps are $250 per week. Friday Drop-ins are $50.

The Next Level

Intermediate to Advanced

After learning the basics of getting out to the surf, sitting, lining up on the wave, catching small waves, standing up on your own, and riding straight, you're ready for THE NEXT LEVEL.

Crystal South Surf Camp

These lessons are about having more fun surfing. We will learn the four basic turns, frontside bottom turn, front side top turn, backside bottom turn and backside top turn. You will develop power and speed in turns, practice floaters, cutbacks, tube rides, and many more. We will coach you into performing these functional maneuvers by practicing balance and compression/extension.
